What is success?

What is success? The simple definition is achieving or doing something you sought to achieve or do. But the type of success we're talking is success in life. All people have dreams (playing football/cricket for their country or winning the lottery) and most fail, but does that make them failures in life? Of course not but then how do we determine whether someone is a success or not? And after a lot of thought I've come to the conclusion that it's not possible to judge.
Each person aspires to different things, some want a happy family, some don't. Some want to move up the career ladder, some don't. Some want to learn more, some don't. So let's take Mr X for example. Mr X went to school like the rest of us, went to college and become a qualified engineer and started his own business. He had two kids one grew up to be a teacher the other took charge of the business. Is Mr X a success? The answer, only Mr X can tell, remember the definition: achieving or doing something YOU SOUGHT TO ACHIEVE OR DO. Mr X may feel that he has succeeded or failed in his life it really depends on what Mr X feels.
You could say to someone "You failed because you didn't have a spouse and children" What if that person didn't want a spouse or children? You could say "You failed because you got a B in maths" What if that person was aiming for a c? The only person who can judge whether we've succeeded or not is ourselves because only we know what we sought to achieve or do. Thank you for you're time.
